-by james..... < click LEGENDS OF THE SUPERHEROES As the superhero movies come and go faster and faster these days, your humble professor gets the same question over and over, with each successively worse movie: ren you worried about INSERT MOVIE HERE ruining the superhero movie??
Last year, it was ren you worried about CATWOMAN??Then a few months back, it was ren you worried about CONSTANTINE??Nowadays, it ren you worried about FANTASTIC FOUR??And my answer is always the same: ope.?Why is that, you ask?
Simple. No superhero movie, no matter how bad, how awful, how soul-numbingly un-good in every sense of the word, can hurt me. Ie seen LEGENDS OF THE SUPERHEROES. Truly, nothing else comes close. What is LEGENDS OF THE SUPERHEROES? Well, Ie seen it with my own eyes, and I still not sure. Airing on NBC in January 1979, LEGENDS was apparently one of Hanna-Barbera few ventures into live-action. If I had to guess, it seems to me like the success of the UPERFRIENDS?Saturday-morning animated series prompted the production of this abomination, a live-action comedy/action kids?show that thankfully only managed to eke out two episodes, most likely because when the people bankrolling this trainwreck saw the finished project, they not only slashed funding, they probably slashed their wrists as well. And who could blame them, really? But I sense that you, gentle reader, might think I exaggerating about just how awful this thing was. So let me take you, through the miracle of videotape, through more than a few atrocious moments from LEGENDS OF THE SUPERHEROES.
The episodes both begin with a roll call, introducing the titular legendary superheroes. Who in the lineup? Leading off is the World Mightiest Mortal, Captain Marvel, surprisingly introduced here as such, as opposed to the usual HAZAM!?labeling the character gets from DC due to Marvel Comics?ownership of the name. Garrett Craig plays the Big Red Cheese here, and the costume looks, well, not that bad, honestly.
Next up is Green Lantern, or as he specifically introduced here he Green Lantern,?played by Howard Murphy. GL costume doesn look quite as sharp as Captain Marvel and the mask is pretty laughable, covering more than half his face. As bad as GL mask is, he got nothing to worry about next to Hawkman, whose helmet seems to be made of construction paper, while his wings resemble a nice quilted bedspread on the laundry line. Not only that, when he dramatically rises up out of the dry ice for his introduction, he lets loose with a mighty squawk that, well, is pretty hard not to giggle at. Il say this for Hawkman actor Bill Nuckols, though: the guy was pretty ripped back in ?9. I mean, look at the guns on that guy.
Surprisingly, next to appear is the Huntress, in what was until just recently her only television appearance ever. The costume looks pretty good here, and actress Barbara Joyce seems to have the necessary, attributes, shall we say, to fill the role. Why Huntress, though? Especially back in the days when she was only appearing on Earth-2? Well, the obvious choice here, Wonder Woman, was then appearing in her own series on CBS, and DC didn have that many female characters who weren merely analogues of male characters, like Supergirl or Batgirl. Of that bunch, the Huntress was undoubtedly one of the coolest (along with one other, whol be appearing shortly). This is also the same reason, by the way, that Superman is nowhere to be seen, as his big-budget movie debut was only a few months old, and there were most likely legal obstacles preventing the character appearance. You ask me, Superman and Wonder Woman should be thanking their agents?P> Our next legend, according to announcer Gary Owens (of course ?who else would you hire back in ?9?), is he joy of the oppressed, the wonder of the multitudes,?the Flash. Yeah, I wouldn have guessed from that introduction, either. Rod Haase doesn have much to do here as Flash except stand around in one of the goofier costumes, as the show effects budget is so low, they just stop the camera and have Haase vanish from the frame, just after making an exaggerated unning?pose, to simulate super-speed.
Black Canary makes her first television appearance next, even sporting the mask she wore way back in her first appearances back in the late ?0s. The uni-named actress Danuta plays the Canary, and much like the Huntress, isn expected to do much more than stand around and look pretty.
Somersaulting toward the screen next is the image of Robin, the Boy Wonder. However, when the acrobatics stop, it most clearly not the same person in the costume who was doing the somersaults ?instead, it now-paunchy, middle-aged Burt Ward, who really has no business being in green shortie shorts and flesh-colored tights at his age. Finally, the star of the show is introduced ?Batman, played by real-life legend Adam West, who looks much better back in his Bat-gear than co-star Ward. Unfortunately, apparently nobody from the show wardrobe department had ever seen an episode of the classic BATMAN TV show, as no one bothers to tuck Adam cowl into his cape, resulting in a distracting flapping as the mask hangs loosely from West chin, making Batman look like he got a bit of a turkey-neck going on?hardly a sight to strike fear into the hearts of criminals.
The first episode, he Challenge,?aired January 18, 1979, and opens in the cavernous lair of the superheroes?arch-enemies, referred to logically (if a bit on-the-nose) as he Supervillains.? The group sits in a semi-circle while the roll is called by none other than the late, great Frank Gorshin as the Riddler. Poor Gorshin ?he must have needed the cash is all I can figure, and he didn even get to wear the cool business-suit-and-derby ensemble he preferred, instead stuck back in the question-mark-covered tights. You gotta say this for Gorshin, though ?the producers got their money worth. In every scene, Frank is chewing up the scenery, emoting, gesticulating and laughing his damn fool head off. Here Gorshin as the Riddler complimenting his own genius: f Shakespeare had had my mind, there no telling how far he could have gone?
It not easy to sell a line like that, but Gorshin does it (as does Adam West, in maybe the show only amusing callback). Even in this piece of crap, Gorshin is eminently watchable. Not that you can hear some of his jokes over the obnoxiously blaring laugh track slapped on this thing?
While Gorshin Riddler is clearly the star here, the leader of the villains is Mordru the sorcerer, an obscure but recurring villain from DC far-future LEGION OF SUPERHEROES comic book. Exactly how Mordru made the list for a network television appearance Il never know, but the costume is as accurate as it gets, and Gabriel Dell overacts the part with gusto.
Each of the villains answers the roll call by abusing or attacking the Riddler in some way, in one of the show many running gags that don really run anywhere. Solomon Grundy is first up, with actually a pretty good makeup and costume job on actor Mickey Morton. Morton plays Grundy to the hilt, and along with Gorshin is one of the few bright spots here. Also present is Sinestro, played by comedian, impressionist and 1970s funny-voice guy Charlie Callas, who surprisingly makes a pretty good Sinestro, despite not having the red skin or giant head. Even more surprising is the appearance of comedian Jeff Altman as the Weather Wizard, in another dead-on perfect costume that looks just plain horrific in real life. Altman is probably best known for his frequent LATE NIGHT WITH DAVID LETTERMAN appearances in the ?0s (where he often cracked up Dave with his many references to uttsteak?and his hilarious impression of his father: l flip you like a cheese omelet, buddy. Il beat you like a rented mule.? and his starring role in what widely considered the worst TV series ever, PINK LADY AND JEFF. Here, Altman pretty much does his Johnny Carson impression in lieu of an actual performance (although that actually seems appropriate in the next episode, which wel get back to?
Wonder Woman villainess Giganta is also in attendance, as played by Aleshia Brevard. Again, in keeping with the show decidedly low budget, she doesn grow to colossal size here, just bends a prop teel?bar around Frank Gorshin neck for a cheap uperstrength?effect. Finally, none other than Captain Marvel arch-nemesis Dr. Thaddeus Bodog Sivana rounds out the group, played with a curiously German accent by the recently departed Howard Morris. Sivana has masterminded the group evil plan, a doomsday machine that will destroy all life on Earth. What exactly is to be gained from this is never made clear, nor is the rationale behind sending the superheroes clues to their evil plan, for that matter. Regardless, the heroes soon get word though one of the Riddler riddles (in the middle of their ceremony honoring the elderly superhero etired Man,?about whom the less said the better), and are off to blindly search for the villain hideout. The scene of the superheroes heroically leaving their headquarters (which, by the way, is clearly the same set as the supervillains?hideout, only slightly redressed) has to be seen to be believed, with Captain Marvel merely jumping off-camera to simulate flight, Flash vanishing in a truly awful super-speed cutaway, and best of all, Green Lantern using his ring to disappear by shooting himself in the face with it. The bulk of the show is taken up with the villains heading out in various disguises to mess with the heroes?heads, apparently just for the fun of it. We see Solomon Grundy disguised as a gas station attendant, ripping engine parts out of the Batmobile? ...while Sinestro poses as a gypsy to read Green Lantern fortune?P> ...Riddler pretends to be a psychiatrist in order to analyze Captain Marvel (who gives up his secret identity after being on the couch for about 15 seconds, by the way ?so much for the wisdom of Solomon)... nd the Weather Wizard poses as a used-car salesman and sells Batman and Robin a motorcycle and sidecar, in which, as you might imagine, hi-larity will ensue. Meanwhile, back at the gas station, Solomon Grundy has overpowered Hawkman and Black Canary and chained them to the auto lift. Of course. That what I would do. Captain Marvel shows up and outwits Grundy (you wouldn think it would be that tough, but the other two couldn pull it off?, and here the sheer stupid moment that sums up, more than anything else, how teeth-clenchingly bad this show was. Hawkman, Captain Marvel and the Canary are still trying to figure out where the villains are, and Captain Marvel points out that Grundy mentioned a lake. A bystander in a nearby phone booth who been watching the fight and making supposedly funny comments (NIGHT COURT Marsha Warfield, as it happens) helpfully adds that she heard Grundy earlier mention an island. And here the deductive genius Hawkman putting all the pieces together, in a bit of swear-to-god real dialogue from the program:
HAWKMAN: here only one lake around here with an island: Hidden Island Lake!?
Dude. Dude. idden Island Lake.?
I don even think it was intended as a joke, because the usually subtle-as-a-brick laugh track doesn make a peep for that line. I really felt myself get stupider, just listening to Hawkman say idden Island Lake.?
Anyway, the heroes all converge on (sigh) Hidden Island Lake, where I see something I was fairly confident that I would never see on television: Mordru the sorcerer riding around on a jet-ski. Yes, there a big jet-ski chase sequence between Batman and Mordru, followed by an even dumber fight scene in the villains?lair, with fight choreography so bad, it makes the original BATMAN TV series look like it was put together by the Yuen Wo-Ping fight team. Burt Ward big contribution here is to get down on his hands and knees so another hero in better shape can push a villain over him, and so we can get this nauseating close-up. Finally, Batman and company slam Sivana head into his own doomsday machine and, mercifully, he Challenge?is over. Unfortunately things would only get worse with the second and final installment of LEGENDS OF THE SUPERHEROES, he Roast,?which aired the following week, January 25, 1979. Here, viewers were subjected to even more non-side-splitting unfunny comedy, as the heroes were roasted and toasted by their friends and foes. Naturally, a host was needed, and somehow, famed TONIGHT SHOW sidekick Ed McMahon was cajoled, bribed or threatened into taking part in this faint imitation of entertainment. Ed really brings the funny here; take this bon mot from his opening monologue, for example: ith all of these capes, it looks like Truman Capote closet in here!?Yikes.
It should be noted, by the way, that the writing credit for both episodes belongs to the ad dream team?of Mike Marmer and Peter Gallay (if that is in fact their real names ?Lord knows I take my name off this thing), who went on to write for that benchmark of TV comedy, BARBARA MANDRELL AND THE MANDRELL SISTERS.
Anyway, the villains all show up to oast" the heroes, including the return of Jeff Altman Weather Wizard, who really kicks his Johnny Carson impression into high gear now. Other appearances include Hawkman mother Esther Hawkman, who even announced by Ed as being from Thanagar (dear god, I wish I was making this up)? nother visit from Retired Man, and the introduction of ?wait for it ?Ghetto Man. Billed as he first Black superhero,?Ghetto Man proceeds to do three minutes of the worst stereotypical stand-up Ie ever heard. It not remotely offensive, it just lame: t about time there were some colored superheroes ?we don think Green Lantern qualifies as colored.?P> n the ghetto, we don say HAZAM!?to get our powers, we say AREEM!?
And so on. It just a train wreck, this thing, and it keeps getting worse, whether it Dr. Sivana lining up the superheroes for a physical (after appearing onstage in the form of a giant beaker ?I still don get that)....or a horrible Rona Barrett impression (a popular 1970s TV gossip host, for you youngns out there) with the bitingly clever name of hoda Rooter,?who interviews Giganta and the Atom about their new love affair. At this point, I ready to gouge my eyes out (and I can believe I had to sit through this again in order to write this ?the things I do for you people), and this is before the wacky sketch in which Batman threatens to beat Robin for totaling the Batmobile, or the appearance of Captain Marvel villainess Aunt Minerva (played by LAUGH-IN Ruth Buzzi) lining up the male superheroes in search of a new husband. And by the way, the sight of her being carried onstage by a couple of 1970s bodybuilder types is plenty unsettling? Just as you thought things had sunk to their absolute lowest, the show closes with a big song and dance number by Mordru, who favors the crowd with his personal rendition of hat Entertainment!? with all-new, evil lyrics ( think diseases are nice/A condition that chronic/A plague that is bubonic?, that is, until Batman brings out the comedy classic, the pie in the face. Wow. I surprised Mordru didn slip on a banana peel on his way out.
How does it all end? How else, with Ed McMahon yelling AREEM!?and flying off the stage. Yeah. I sorry, too. This whole thing is like a fever dream, but without all the fun of the chills, nightsweats and dehydration. Luckily for you, the odds of you ever being subjected to this yourself are pretty slim, unless you know someone who likes you (or dislikes you) enough to make you a copy of this little-known piece of cinematic offal. If you should happen to see it, trust me: avert your eyes. But if you do happen to see it, youl know what I meant above ?after this, I can skate through CATWOMAN or BLADE III in my sleep?

X-Men Origins: Wolverine 《變種特攻前傳:狼人》首支預告片震撼發佈: http://www.x-menorigins.com/ <click to watch Weapon Plus History Though during the 1940's the existence of mutants was unknown to the general public, a few individuals were aware of the coming of Homo Superior, and that they had the potential to replace baseline humans as the dominant species of Earth. Thus Weapon Plus was created to address the so-called mutant problem. What was ignored by everyone involved in Weapon Plus is that its mastermind, John Sublime, was actually the host body for a sentient bacteria present on every living creature on the planet, save for mutants, who were genetically immune to the Sublime infection.
The first nine installments of Weapon Plus were partially successful. Weapon X produced a number of agents, though it branched off and even became opposed to Weapon Plus's interests. To prevent subsidiary programs from going rogue, Weapon Plus directly oversaw the creation of the last living weapons operating in the clandestine facilities of The World, employing Bolivar Trask's Sentinel technology.
Throughout the decades, Weapon Plus has used increasingly more extreme methods to create its supersoldiers. Captain America was enhanced to peak human levels. Weapon X employed genetic alteration, brainwashing and memory implants. The latest creations were bred specifically to become mutant-hunting weapons much deadlier than Sentinels.
Installments of Weapon Plus and Living Weapons Generations [edit] Weapon 0 Project: Rebirth began as collaboration between the American, British and German eugenicists led by Doctors Reinstein and Koch. When World War II began, Koch took over the German program, and Josef Reinstein (Erskine) moved to the American program.
In the non-canonical novel "Wolverine: Violent Tendencies", Weapon 0 is referred to as "Weapon Null" and is an early and dismissed branch of a super-soldier program completely different to the Weapon Plus program of the comics. Weapon Null was focused on the utilisation of bioenhancement to upgrade soldiers into organic self-contained weapons; the grotesque creations require extensive and expensive maintenance and transportation conditions, so the program was shelved. During the course of the novel, Wolverine encounters four of Weapon Null's more successful creations: "Slammer", "Blowtorch", "Cypher" and "Bipolar".
Weapon I Project: Rebirth, headed by Professor Abraham Erskine (given Reinstein's name as a cover identity) managed to produce Captain America (Steve Rogers). However, Erskine was murdered moments after Rogers was successfully empowered, the refinements he introduced which made the process successful lost with his death. With his demise, Josef Reinstein took over the American program.
Two other subjects, Clinton McIntyre, a.k.a. Protocide, a failed experiment who was placed in suspended animation and was revived in the modern era by AIM, and the first mutant experiment designated Queen seem to have occurred prior to the Super Soldier Serum being tested on Steve Rogers.
Reinstein's early attempts to refine the formula resulted in African American super soldiers (most prominently Isaiah Bradley). Three hundred African-American soldiers were taken from Camp Cathcart and subjected to potentially fatal experiments at an undisclosed location, as seen in Truth: Red, White & Black in an attempt to recreate the Super Soldier formula. Only five men survived the original trials; hundreds of test subjects left behind at Camp Cathcart and the camp's commander were executed by US soldiers in the name of secrecy, the families of the three hundred were told that they had died in battle. Isaiah Bradley was the lone survivor.
Although there were many later attempts to recreate or reverse-engineer Project: Rebirth's Super-Soldier Serum, none are known to have been involved with Weapon Plus except for the attempt that resulted in the creation of Isaiah Bradley's son Josiah X. Weapon Plus considers Captain America as its most successful creation, despite the fact that Rogers has been at odds with the United States government a number of times. It should be noted that Project: Rebirth was retroactively made a part of the Weapon Plus after WWII when Weapon Plus was actually formed.
Weapon II-IV Weapons II-IV experimented on animals. It is unknown if the experiments succeeded in creating a living weapon. Grant Morrison only touched lightly on this element of the Weapon Plus project during his tenure on New X-Men, but later explored the theme of animal-based weapon development in other projects such as the DC Comics publication We3.
Weapons V & VI Weapons V and VI employed various ethnic minorities as test subjects.
Weapon VII Weapon VII, aka Project: Homegrown, experimented on human soldiers during the Vietnam War. Some of the known participants who died in Project: Homegrown included Andrew Perlmutter, Michael Labash, John Walsh, James MacPherson and fourteen other unknown recruits. The only known successful subject of Project: Homegrown was Nuke, who had armored implants under his epidermis and was addicted to powerful steroids. Logan, who would later become one of Weapon Plus' victims, kidnapped Nuke as a child, and oversaw his conditioning.
The United Kingdom also had its own version of Project: Homegrown, aka the Black Budget, which managed to create the team known as the Super Soldiers: Dauntless, Gog, Dreadnaught, Revenge, Victory, Invincible, Challenger, and some unnamed super-soldiers.
The Mercy Corporation, an off-shoot of S.H.I.E.L.D. that worked on super-soldiers and eventually broke off, also had its own unit of super-soldiers, using a serum similar to previous derivatives of the Super-Soldier Serum from Weapon I. Their agents included Jack Reno, Keel, Kyle, Agent Villarosa, Agent Davis and Agent Milo.
Weapon VIII & IX Weapons VIII & IX experimented on criminals and psychopaths.
In Wolverine: The End, by Paul Jenkins, it was revealed that Weapon IX was, in fact, Wolverine's older brother John Howlett (first introduced in Origin), long thought deceased. However, due to the inherent instability in the possible futures depicted in Marvel comics, it is unknown if this is regarded as canon, as the storyline depicted in The End is not considered canon.
Weapon X Wolverine, a.k.a. Weapon X (Weapon Ten)
Main article: Weapon X
Weapon X, tenth in the series, is the X-Man Wolverine, and this project would branch off into its own series of subjects. The trademark of Weapon X was the use of mutants as test subjects and the employment of memory implants.
Weapon XI No individual with the 'Weapon XI' moniker has been seen, but John Sublime has mentioned it. A likely candidate for Weapon XI's true identity is the Hound (a mutant with the power to hunt and kill other mutants), who was transformed by the Hound Program of the US government into a techno-organic killing machine. He battled the government-sponsored incarnation of X-Factor after massacring scientists at a US government research facility, nearly killing Sabretooth in the process, but was stopped by Polaris, who was forced to use her power at its full limit. He was later after Shard, but was destroyed in an explosion after being defeated by her and Bishop.
Scott Adkins has reportedly been cast as Weapon XI in the movie X-Men Origins: Wolverine[1] It has not been revealed what sort of powers he will wield.
Weapon XII Weapon Plus created Weapon XII (aka Huntsman, real name Zona Cluster 6) at the England-based facilities of The World. He was the first living weapon created employing artificial evolution and nanosentinel technology. Weapon XII was "accidentally" unleashed on the Channel Tunnel and fought X-Corporation members Cannonball, M, Darkstar, Rictor, Siryn and Multiple Man. Weapon XII was eliminated by Fantomex with the aid of Jean Grey and Professor X, but at the cost of Darkstar's life. Huntsman was created to be part of the Super-Sentinels, a mutant-hunting team of superheroes with a base in a Weapon Plus space station. This team, a brainchild of John Sublime, was intended to be a publicity stunt to make the genocide of mutants much more acceptable to the public.
Weapon XIII Weapon Plus created Weapon XIII Fantomex, whose real name is Charlie Cluster 7, also at The World. However, Fantomex rebelled against his creators. Like in the case of Weapon XII, Fantomex's powers derive from Nanosentinel technology.
Weapon XIV In New X-Men #154 (May 2004), Grant Morrison's last issue of New X-Men, the telepathic quintuplets called the Stepford Cuckoos were identified as Weapon XIV. The Stepford Cuckoos link to Weapon Plus has finally been addressed in the Phoenix: Warsong miniseries, written by Greg Pak, which explores unresolved storylines from Morrison's New X-Men and Pak's Phoenix: Endsong.
Weapon XV So far, the last creation of Weapon Plus is Weapon XV, aka Ultimaton, designed to be the Super-Sentinels' grand powerhouse. He dies when Wolverine destroys the Weapon Plus space station that was designed as the Super-Sentinels HQ.
The World The World is a secret lab owned by the Weapon Plus Project, in which the program scientists intend to create superior humans employing eugenics, nanotechnology and artificial evolution technology (time is "artificial" at the World and it can be frozen or altered in any way the Program Scientists desire). The artificial time technology employed by Weapon Plus was stolen from AIM. A low level of gamma radiation is constantantly present to produce mutations in the population.
The human DNA of the inhabitants' ancestors in this artificial environment was spliced with sentinel microtechnology, meaning they are no longer humans in the traditional meaning of the word, as they have evolved into a race of mutated and naturally born cyborgs refined through eugenics.
Because the scientists have absolute control over the time inside The World (according to Fantomex the time is "liquid"), both freezing it and speed it up so that decades and centuries can pass within it while time runs normally in the real world, this opens up for new possibilities within the areas of eugenics and genetic engineering. The most promising individuals in each generation are selected while the others are terminated. Also natural selection in the form of the survival of the fittest is possible by exposing the population to different forms of selective pressure. This way, new breeds of superhumans can be evolved within a few months, instead of hundreds or thousands of years. Half a million years inside The World represents only eighteen months on the outside.
The World's facilities contains a population (with its own religion, history and culture) that is led to believe that beyond the World's limits there's nothing else than endless rock and that mutants are coming to destroy them. Like in Logan's Run, those who are selected for termination believe there is a reward awaiting them at the other side. The World is also filled with numerous experiments and prototypes of Weapon Plus, such as car-cops.
The World was partially destroyed when agents of AIM attacked the facilities in order to recover the technology Weapon Plus stole from them. However, they are killed by Weapon XV.
Post-M-Day Following M-Day, the enormous number of mutants is no more; mutantkind has been reduced to the brink of extinction, with millions rendered powerless. However, it is unknown whether the depowered mutants are immune to Sublime. In any event, Weapon Plus appears again in Phoenix: Warsong, in which Sublime tries to use the Stepford Cuckoos to wipe out the surviving mutants in a manner reminiscent of William Stryker's plan in the movie X2.
In Other Media In the Marvel Studios film The Incredible Hulk, General Ross can be seen extracting an experimental super-soldier serum from a cold storage lab where the containers are marked "Weapons Plus".

The future's not set. There's no fate but what we make for ourselves.
